Dental Crowns and Same Day Crowns
Dental crowns offer relief to patients who require a restorative solution that enables them to maintain the proper appearance and function of the teeth. Though very effective in restoring the beauty of the smile and the functionality of affected teeth, having dental crowns placed does take time – often multiple office visits, in fact. However, at Preferred Dental Care Center we now offer same day dental crowns so that you can get back that brilliant smile in less than half the time!
What is a Dental Crown?
The term "dental crown" refers to a cap that is placed over tooth requiring restorative measures. A cap restores the tooth itself to the original shape, size and color, as well as improve the overall appearance of the tooth. Crowns offer a resilient restorative solution that supply added durability and protection to the structure of the tooth in need of support.
What are Dental Crowns made of?
There are three types of dental crowns used for restorative purposes: porcelain-fused to metal, all porcelain and gold.
||Porcelain-fused to metal: Porcelain-fused to metal crowns are composed of a filling that is metal based with a porcelain covering baked around the outer portion.
||All porcelain: All porcelain crowns offer the patient the most aesthetically pleasing crown option as there is no risk of metal becoming visible through the porcelain over time.
||Gold: Gold crowns will cause the least amount of damage to the surrounding teeth and require the least amount of removal of the existing tooth structure.
There are many reasons why Dr. Nicholas Grasvik of Preferred Dental Care Center might recommend a dental crown as a treatment solution. If Dr. Grasvik determines that a dental crown is necessary as a restoration solution for your tooth or teeth, he will present you with the most suitable options available to you in terms of type of crown recommended.
Dental Crown Procedure
The standard procedure for a dental crown is much more time consuming than Preferred Dental Care Center’s same day dental crown procedure. The standard procedure generally necessitates at least two appointments.
At the first appointment an impression of the tooth or teeth will be made in order to provide you with a temporary crown. Additionally, molds will be taken of the tooth or teeth that require restoration in order to fabricate the final permanent crown. During this first visit the tooth will also be prepared for placement of the crown. This generally requires the use of a local anesthesia to numb the area before the decay is removed. Once the decay has been adequately removed, the tooth will then be shaped to fit a temporary crown.
Usually around two weeks after the first appointment, you will return to have the permanent crown placed.
