Man with A magnifying glass to his mouth showing his seemless smile thanks to dental implants. If you have lost one or more teeth and are considering options for replacement, you may want to consider whether a dental implant may be the right choice for you.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is basically a metal post that is surgically inserted into your jawbone. After your jawbone has fused to this metal post, we can attach an artificial tooth to the post; the post acts as a root for the tooth that is being attached to it.

A dental implant, when completed, will look, feel, and function exactly like a natural tooth. Implants can be used for a number of things, including replacing individual teeth or acting as anchor teeth for the installation of a bridge.

How is a dental implant installed?

The process of having a dental implant put into your mouth involves a number of steps and multiple visits to us. Although it is a somewhat lengthy process compared to other tooth replacement alternatives, the end result very closely mimics a real tooth.

To begin with, we will use a special drill to open a small hole in your jawbone. The dental implant will be placed into this hole and the soft tissue around it will be sutured closed. Approximately 1 to 2 weeks after your surgery your sutures will be removed; however, you will not be fully healed and ready for the next step in the process for approximately 3 to 6 months.

During the next 3 to 6 months your jawbone will fuse to the dental implant. After this is complete you will return to us for the next step in the procedure. we will install a small metal post into the implant; over this post he or she will attach a porcelain tooth which has been created from bite impressions we previously took. The new tooth will be shaded to match your other teeth and will be virtually indistinguishable from your real teeth.

Caring for Your Dental Implant

Once the process is completed, your dental implant will act as a real tooth. You should perform basic dental hygiene on the artificial tooth the same way that you would with your natural teeth. With proper care, a dental implant should last decades.

Is a dental implant right for me?

Although a dental implant is superior in feel and appearance to many other alternatives it is not always the best option for every person. People who have weakened jawbones, or jawbones with insufficient room in them, may not be a good fit for a dental implant. In addition, dental implants tend to cost more and require more visits to the dentist than other alternatives.

If you think that a dental implant is an option you would be interested in please mention it to us during your next visitor give us a call at (503) 610-0114. We would be happy to review the process with you and help you determine whether this is the best choice for you.
