Dental Bonding

Pretty blonde woman smiling with beautiful teethDental bonding a dental procedure that is used for cosmetic purposes to make minor changes to the appearance of the front of a tooth. Dental bonding is most often used to repair cracks, chips and minor flaws of the teeth, as well as for whitening purposes. Dental bonding may be used as an alternative cosmetic procedure in lieu of other lengthier and costly procedures.

Bonding refers to the process by which a tooth-colored resin composite material is applied to the surface of the tooth. Once the material has been placed, it is then shaped and hardened by the use of a special light. Afterward, the tooth is polished and immediately the smile is improved and restored to its original brilliance.

What Is Dental Bonding Used For?

There are a wide array of reasons why Dr. Nicholas Grasvik might recommend dental bonding as a restorative solution for your dental issues. Some of the most common include:
•  To repair teeth that are cracked or have been chipped
•  As a repair option for decayed teeth
•  To improve the overall appearance of discolored or stained teeth
•  To fill gaps between existing teeth
•  To reshape misshapen teeth
•  To extend the length of the teeth that the patient desires to be "longer"
•  Cosmetically as an alternative to amalgam fillings
•  As a protective measure when a portion of the patient's tooth has been exposed due to receding gums

Dental Bonding - How It Works

The process of dental bonding is a relatively simple one that generally can be completed from start to finish in just one visit to Preferred Dental Care. In fact, the entire procedure usually only takes from 30 to 60 minutes to complete.

The process will begin as Dr. Grasvik prepares the surface of the tooth for bonding. This is done by roughening the surface and applying a special conditioner liquid that makes the tooth surface more suitable for the bonding material to adhere to. Once the surface is adequately prepared, Dr. Grasvik will proceed by applying the tooth-colored putty like composite and shaping it to match the rest of the smile, so that it maintains a natural appearance. The resin that is applied to the tooth will be matched using a shade guide to get as close to existing tooth color as possible. By use of a special ultraviolet light the material will harden and then be polished and buffed to achieve a smooth finish that matches the sheen of the existing teeth.

Though dental bonding is not as durable as porcelain veneers, it does offer an adequate and much more affordable solution to certain dental issues. Dental bonding offers a much more efficient solution in terms of time spent and is so non-invasive that it generally does not even require the use of anesthesia.

If you have a minor dental concern that you feel may make you a candidate for dental bonding and if you are looking for a solution that is affordable, not time consuming and highly effective, then call the offices of Preferred Dental Care today to discuss your options.
