Dental Bridges
Beaverton, OR

Dental bridge animationA dental bridge offers a restorative solution to replacing a missing tooth or missing teeth for functionality and/or cosmetic purposes. As a fixed (non-removable) appliance, a dental bridge plays the role of quite literally bridging the gap between missing teeth and natural existing teeth. A dental bridge itself consists of two or more dental crowns (usually all porcelain), which generally have a gap between, that are anchored to the structure of the existing natural tooth – also referred to as abutment teeth.

Dental bridges are a highly durable restorative option that will last you many years with the proper home care. The composition of the teeth and crowns that make up the bridge will affect the estimated lifespan of the bridge. The false teeth that are used in a dental bridge are constructed of one of three materials: porcelain, alloys or gold, or even a combination of the materials. Each of these options comes with their own unique set of benefits of which Dr. Nicholas Grasvik will review with you should he determine that a bridge is the restorative solution for you

Reasons for a Dental Bridge

There are many reasons why Dr. Grasvik might recommend a fixed dental bridge as a treatment solution. Some of the most common include:
•  Preventing the drifting of existing teeth - dental bridges are highly effective at preventing the movement of existing teeth should one be or more be lost.
•  Maintaining natural face shape - dental bridges hold the place of a lost tooth and thus prevent movement. They are also very useful in stimulating the jaw, this helps to prevent bone loss in the future.
•  Cosmetic purposes - with the help of a fixed dental bridge the patient can restore the "natural" beauty of the smile.
•  For functionality purposes - with the assistance of a dental bridge the patient can again have full functional use of the mouth which includes the ability to eat, chew and speak properly.
•  Correcting issues with the patient's bite

The Process of Getting a Dental Bridge

After your initial visit to Preferred Dental Care Center, Dr. Grasvik will have you return for the first of two visits to have your dental bridge installed. At your first appointment, Dr. Grasvik will prepare your abutment teeth for attachment. This involves manipulating the shape of the teeth by contouring the enamel to make room for the crown. Dr. Grasvik will fit you for a temporary bridge while your permanent bridge is being custom made, to protect the existing teeth and gums from damage.

At your second appointment, Dr. Grasvik will warrant the proper fitting and placement of the new dental bridge, which will be placed after the temporary is removed and the teeth prepared for attachment. For those receiving permanent bridges, expect that a temporary cement will be placed first to test the comfortability, appearance and functionality of the bridge before Dr. Grasvik will have you return for permanent placement.

As with all restorative dental procedures and solutions, proper oral hygiene and preventative care will prolong the life of the appliance.
