Dental Health is Critical for People with Peanut Allergies
Posted on 6/10/2016 by Nic Grasvik
If you are out on a date and about to kiss someone, you may not be thinking about what that person ate recently.
However, if you have an allergy to peanuts, you should be.
That's because peanut allergens can stay on the saliva for some time after a meal, and even if your date hasn't eaten peanuts for four hours, these allergens can still be swapped to you.
For that reason, it is important that you keep oral health in mind.
What Happens If You Are Exposed to Peanut Allergens?
If you have a peanut allergy, you are likely well aware of what will happen if you come into contact with peanut allergens. You may develop hives or other skin reactions, and you could suffer from tongue, lip, and facial swelling. For people with severe allergies, swelling can also cause a life threatening reaction known as anaphylaxis.
This could result in narrowing of the lung airways, throat swelling, and a severe blood pressure drop, and if treatment isn't received right away, the condition could even be deadly.
What Can You Do?
So, if you have a peanut allergy, what exactly can you do to keep yourself safe? It certainly isn't convenient to have to police what any potential date eats, but it really is important to ask them what they have eaten in order to avoid any foods that contain peanuts.
If you are completely opposed to asking someone what they have eaten, your next best option is to wait for several hours after they have eaten to go in for the kiss. Encouraging him to brush his teeth after a meal can also help, and make sure that your potential romantic interest knows about your allergy and just how serious it is.
