Cold sores are a common occurrence, and because of that fact, there is a lot of information going around about them.
Unfortunately, some of this information simply isn't true, so it is important to separate the fact from the fiction.
Myth: A Cold Sore is Only Contagious When the Blister is Present
In reality, a cold sore will be contagious from the first sign that one is about to pop up until the time it has healed completely. Be sure to take extra care to protect others if you are experiencing an outbreak.
Myth: Kissing Someone with a Cold Sore is the Only Way to Contract One
Kissing someone during a cold sore outbreak is certainly a common way to contract the virus, but it isn't the only method. You can also contract cold sores by sharing towels, razors, utensils, and cups with an infected person.
Myth: If You've Never Experienced an Outbreak, You Obviously Don't Have the Virus
Actually, about 90% of adults are exposed to the cold sore virus, but only between 20% and 40% will experience cold sores.
Myth: Getting a Cold Will Result in Cold Sores
There are certainly cases in which catching a cold leads to a cold sore outbreak, but the two events don't always happen at the same time. You can get a cold sore when you aren't ill, and you can also get a cold without suffering from an outbreak.
Myth: Cold Sores Can Be Cured
While there are treatments available to help speed up the recovery time associated with cold sores, there is no definitive cure for the virus that causes them. Prescription and over-the-counter medications can also reduce the discomfort that they cause.
