Gum Disease: A Hidden Epidemic
Beaverton, OR

Gum Disease - Beaverton, ORGum disease is a widespread problem in the United States today: it is estimated that more than half of the adult population has at least the preliminary stages of the disease. Left untreated, gum disease can cause a loss of tooth and jawbone deterioration, and other serious issues. Some experts believe it can even contribute to cardiovascular problems such as heart attacks, strokes, and other issues. The good news is that it is highly preventable and—in the early stages—even reversible with proper dental hygiene practices.

What is gum disease?

Simply put, gum disease is caused when your gum tissue—the pink tissue surrounding your teeth—develops an infection due to plaque on the teeth and under the gum line. It is a particularly pernicious condition due to the fact that most of the people who have gum disease do not even know it.

Stages and Symptoms of Gum Disease

The earliest stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis and is frequently detected by the presence of gums that bleed easily, especially after brushing and flossing. At this stage treatment is very simple: have your teeth thoroughly cleaned by us and then engage in regular brushing and flossing. Other early symptoms of gum disease include persistent bad breath, gums which appear red and feel sore, soreness in the mouth when chewing, and even gums that may bleed for no reason at all.

The more advanced age of gum disease is known as periodontitis and is indicated by—among other things—teeth that are loose and no longer fit together properly when chewing. If you have dentures, they may no longer fit correctly. In addition to damage to your soft tissues, you may experience bone loss in some areas of the mouth. Generally speaking, gum disease tends to progress rather slowly; however, you should be aware that it is possible to experience periods during which the disease worsens very rapidly.

Treatment for Gum Disease

Fortunately gum disease is highly preventable. Basic dental hygiene such as regular brushing and flossing will go a long way towards preventing this disease or even reversing it when it is in its early stages. In addition, you should make it a point to have your teeth professionally cleaned at least every six months.

Treatment is slightly more intensive when the disease has already progressed to an advanced stage. We may use antibiotics and other measures to treat the disease.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms noted above—or if you have any other reason to believe that you might be suffering from gum disease—you need to be sure to contact us at the earliest available opportunity at (503) 610-0114.
