Three Rare Dental Conditions You Probably Didn't Know About

Posted on 1/15/2016 by Nic Grasvik
A young boy that is suffering from hyperdontia causing pain. For most of us, our regular trips to the dentist are relatively routine and involve cleanings and the occasional filling. Most people do not need to visit a dental specialist for a serious condition, but there are some out there. These three conditions are extremely rare and require specialized treatment and monitoring.

Hyperdontia

During childhood, kids will lose their baby teeth, and over time, they will be replaced with 32 permanent, adult teeth. In some cases, people will grow an excessive amount of teeth, and this condition is known as hyperdontia. This is a rare issue that affects only about 2% of the population. The condition is considered to be hereditary, and in most cases, it only manifests as a single extra tooth found behind the upper teeth on the top jaw. Fortunately, it is easily treated by extracting that extra tooth.

Papillon-Lefevre Syndrome

Also known as PLS, Papillon-Lefevre Syndrome is a genetic disorder that results from a severe deficiency of an enzyme that is needed to keep the connective tissues that connect and support the teeth healthy. When this enzyme is not present, a person will slowly begin to lose their teeth.

This starts with the baby teeth at around the age of four, and the adult teeth will begin to fall out in the teen years. Antibiotic treatment has been shown to slow down the process, but most PLS patients will have their remaining teeth extracted during the teen years and opt for dentures.

Otodental Syndrome

This is another genetic disorder, and while it is most commonly noted for impacting the hearing, the teeth will also be affected. The molars and canines will be enlarged to the point where the structure of the face is affected. This can lead the rest of the teeth to become damaged or crowded. Treatment can be complicated and often involves repair and extractions.
