What Exactly is an Enameloplasty?

Posted on 10/13/2015 by Nic Grasvik
A woman happy after receiving her enameloplasty treatment to repair her smile.Have you ever heard of an enameloplasty? This procedure is sometimes known as teeth reshaping, and it is a dentistry treatment where the shape and size of your existing tooth's enamel is removed or shaved in order to reshape the tooth. This is a permanent procedure that can be used to improve the appearance of your teeth, or it can be used to prepare your teeth for future treatment like veneers.

Candidates for an Enameloplasty

If the surface of your teeth has worn down, fractured, or chipped, you are probably a good candidate for enameloplasy treatment to restore your teeth. Bad habits and teeth grinding can cause your teeth to become chipped and wear down, and when the teeth become damaged due to decay, the enamel may also need to be restored to repair the structure and function of the tooth. Likewise, if your teeth seem to be a bit misshapen or oversized, you could be a good candidate, but greater problems may need a different type of treatment to improve the function and structure of the smile.

The Enameloplasty Procedure

When the time comes for you to have your enameloplasty, the procedure will generally start off with an exam of your teeth and the taking of X-rays. If it is determined that an enameloplasty is right for you, your teeth will be cleaned , and a reshaping instrument will be used in order to gently shave off some of the enamel surface of your teeth in order to reshape the tooth so that it appears healthier. Once it is reformed, the teeth will be smoothed and polished, restoring them back to their natural-looking appearance. Unless you have questions about the procedure, you won't need to follow-up regarding this specific issue, and you won't need any future enameloplasty treatments.

For the procedure, you usually won't need any anesthetic, as the process is quite simple and painless. Only the enamel is being removed, not the root or any other areas of the teeth that might experience pain. However, if you are feeling anxious or nervous about the procedure, sedative options may be discussed.

Enameloplasty and Your Oral Health

Having an enameloplasty can actually be quite beneficial for your oral health. If uneven or excess enamel is removed, your teeth may be able to fit back into proper alignment. This can improve your bite and tooth structure. Proper alignment of your teeth is essential in giving your facial muscles a proportionate appearance, and when the teeth aren't properly aligned, it can be difficult to chew or speak properly.

Benefits of Enameloplasty

In addition to the oral health benefits that accompany an enameloplasty, the procedure can also come with some other distinct advantages. By improving the condition of the surfaces of the teeth, you'll be able to clean them easier, reducing the chance that you will develop gum disease or tooth decay. If decay does occur in the tooth, the infection could spread to other parts of your body, so any steps that you can take to prevent decay before it starts is a wise one.

The enamel of your teeth won't grow back, so once it has been chipped away, it won't return. The results of an enameloplasty will be permanent, so before you go through with the procedure, you'll want to be completely sure about it. The best thing that you can do to make an informed decision about whether an enameloplasty is right for you is to talk to your dentist, so please contact us to see up your consultation and to talk about your options.
