Fight Illness this Fall with Good Habits

Posted on 9/15/2015 by Nic Grasvik
A woman eating a healthy salad.Fall is a time for many illnesses to start being passed around. Whether you have children in school or daycare; you work outside of the home; or you just go to public places, the germs are plentiful! Before you start isolating yourself at home or dealing with the non-stop illnesses, here are a few simple ways to keep those germs away.

Change Your Toothbrush

It is a good habit to get into to change your toothbrush at the start of every season. This will have you using a new toothbrush roughly every 3 months, which is the perfect way to get rid of old germs and give your mouth a fresh start. In addition, during the fall and winter months, a time when many people tend to get sick, you should change your toothbrush after every illness. This helps to eliminate the risk of spreading germs further as your mouth is the gateway to the rest of your body. If you absolutely do not want to change your toothbrush for some reason, at the very least, run it through the dishwasher to ensure that the germs are removed.

Drink Plenty of Water
Your mouth and body need to stay hydrated in order to fight germs. The drier your mouth becomes, the less saliva you produce, which leaves your mouth at risk for trapping bacteria. Try to drink at least 8 eight ounce glasses of water per day. If that is not possible, at the very least, drink a glass of water with every meal and snack to ensure that you are encouraging saliva production and the subsequent removal of the germs in your mouth. This gives your mouth and body a fighting chance at staying healthy this fall.

Keep your Hands away from your Mouth
Many of us have the bad habit of putting our hands in our mouth. Whether you are a nail biter, use your fingers to remove debris from your tooth, or you just fidget with your hands in your mouth, now is the time to stop. There are thousands of germs underneath your fingernails that you could be letting loose in your mouth if you bite your nails or even put your fingers in your mouth. Try to find other ways to manage your stress or your boredom so that your health can stay intact this fall and winter.

Eat Healthy
Eating healthy is good for your teeth and your body. Fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy, and lean protein help to provide your body with the nutrients it needs to fight germs. They also fill you up so that you do not consume the other foods that are bad for your oral and physical health, such as refined carbohydrates and sugary sweets. Focus on eating the colors of the rainbow at every meal and try to steer clear of sugar-filled drinks such as juice and soda so that your mouth and body can stay healthy.

These simple tips can help you to fight the germs that run rampant during the fall and winter months. There is no foolproof way to ensure that you will not get sick during this time of year, but when you enhance your chances of staying healthy, you will have a better chance at achieving your goal. When you work together with your oral and physical health, the rest just falls into place. Start today by taking care of yourself so that your body is ready to fight those germs that will be flying around before we know it!
